Key Trends in AI and Orthopedics

Enhanced AI applications are currently under development to make computer-assisted surgery even more precise and effective.

Fremont, CA: Artificial intelligence is designed to improve industries from healthcare to electricity, retail and beyond. But how do these new technologies impact the orthopedic specialty? We address our top 3 developments in orthopedic-focused AI to keep an eye on as new technologies continue to change the landscape of medical practice.

Radiography Improvements

One research in 2017 looked at the feasibility of using AI programs to read orthopaedic trauma radiographs. The AI software was compared with the gold standard for fractures. They found that the AI software had an accuracy of at least 90 per cent when assessing laterality, body part, and exam view, while the final fracture accuracy was 83 per cent.In addition, the program carried out similar analyses of the same photographs by two senior orthopaedic surgeons. As this program progresses, the ability to identify a mass amount of radiographic images and relate these images to results should have a significant effect on the effectiveness and efficiency of the orthopedic specialty.

Computer-Assisted Surgery

Enhanced AI applications are currently under development to make computer-assistedsurgery even more precise and effective. For example, in total hip surgery, computer assistance for placing a cup of the prosthesis is stated to have the same accuracy rate as conventional methods. In addition, the mapping of CT and/or MRI scans to the physical bone can allow the computer system to navigate to the surgeon, improve the positioning of the knee replacement implant and create a much smaller incision for the patient.

Virtual Nursing Assistants

Digital nursing assistants may minimize unnecessary visits and take the burden away from medical professionals. According to Syneos Health Communications, 64 percent of patients reported being happy with AI nurse assistants. Patients see the key advantages of virtual nursing assistants as 24/7 access to a program that would provide answers and general assistance, in particular in the form of general health monitoring and answering prescription questions.Potential advantages for practice by virtual nursing assistants include acts that do not require medical expertise to be done. For example, guiding patients to the correct examining room or relaying care costs.
